Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India, or simply Lagaan

Lagaan was nominated for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 74th Academy Awards...Oscars. At the 49th National Film Awards, the film won a total of eight awards, including for Best Popular Film.

Lagaan (land tax) is a story set in ancient India, when the British ruled India and were levying heavy taxes on poor villagers. Lagaan Hindi movie revolves around a small village burdened by taxes and cursed by the rain gods. With lack of crop, they are unable to pay the tax to the ruling British regime. Trying to request for a respite from these taxes, they fall in an unusual situation and are challenged for a game of cricket, a sport that they have never heard of or seen before. They only have one choice, to accept the challenge or to pay double taxes. Bhuvan, played by Amir Khan in Lagaan, agrees to the bet and faces the fury of the rest of the villagers.
